Ethan Claymore takes the stage at Winchester’s Old Town Hall
The Dundas County Players are proud to announce the upcoming production of Ethan Claymore at the Old Town Hall in Winchester on November 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29, 2009. Written by Norm Foster, Canada’s most produced playwright, this heart-warmingly funny show has the right combination of sentiment and comedy to become a pre-Christmas classic.
Director Bill Steele has been itching to present this play to local audiences. “Ethan Claymore is a story of love and redemption, spiced up with lots of laughter and a pinch of magic. It’s set in rural Canada, in a place not unlike Dundas County, and deals with the transformation of ordinary people in everyday situations.”
The play’s hero, Ethan Claymore, is a widowed egg farmer pining for his dead wife and desperate to make sense of an unresolved relationship with his brother. It’s a week before Christmas and Ethan’s nosy neighbour thinks it’s high time to stop mourning and start living again. The arrival of a new school teacher in the community is an occasion for some country-style matchmaking and it’s time for the egg farmer to get out and find a mate. That may seem plot enough, but just as it is set forth, Ethan's estranged brother, Martin shows up, freshly dead and unseen by all but Ethan, who has been having flashbacks wherein he witnesses the beginning of the rift between his younger self and big brother Martin. What happens between these two men, at first estranged and bitter, is a journey of self-discovery towards resolving the sadness of the past.
“The moving and believable performances of our local actors will undoubtedly capture the imagination of our audience and tug at their heartstrings,” added Steele. “Life can be turned around and made magical by a touching human transformation.”
Dundas County Players guarantee a show that is sweet and funny and delightfully suited to any age. Evening performances start at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 20, 21, 27 and 28. There’ll be a 2 p.m. matinee on Sundays, November 22 and 29.
